Ok, so we now have a new look and feel. Well that is to say we now have a look and feel. I finally got around to installing The Community Starter Kit this weekend. This is not only a great example of the future of web content deployment but the damn thing works directly out of the package. And the package comes with the source code so you can bang out your custom features at your own leisure.
There are a great number of transitions that Microsoft development is has been going through that will revolutionize the web and commerce (Like that doesn't happen every other week). The idea of integrated technologies is the most exciting part of technology revolutions. This is something Microsoft excels at and why I have slowly, reluctantly become a fan of Microsoft.
Ironically, perhaps, the largest corporation on earth may make the playing field more equal for small business. It became apparent to most of us in the IT field a few years ago that things could not continue as they were. People who knew how to spell VB, Java, or Oracle where getting salaries that people in other fields where taking years to achieve. And possible worse then this idea was (is) the perception that they had to do this so work could get done. Lot of money and no work, it is no surprise in retrospect that the dotcom world came crashing down.
The old saying is work smart not hard; that's how you win at the productivity game. As I see it the revolutions will come in productivity. More for less; web development and content management, internet access issues aside, has been the brick wall small companies, companies that could not afford to hire 20 web developers to keep a site active and up to date. When this becomes "easy" then we will see the true dotcom age. The last 7 or so years have just been a trail run.
With the release of Windows 2003 and .Net we have moved one step closer to this goal. I have no delusion that everything will someday be “easy” because we are always going to want to push the envelope, go beyond what the other guy is doing, but if we can get to point 90% of the garbage out of the way and get down to doing what it is we want to do then someday we may be able to actually, honestly say that technology has improved our lives.
Therefore this site is dedicated to those “Goldbergedium” nerds like me that are willing to work extra hard to for an easier life. I’m excited about the site. I’m excited about the future of tech, and I hope you all use this site and other community sites that you come across to that end. Oh yea, there is also a Pop Culture (formaly slacker section) section becuase if you can't have fun with it, it's not worth haveing.
